From start to finish, how does a concept come to life?

First question after receiving the brief is always why did they contact me? is it for my style of work or is it because you know 3d.

This is important because in some cases the agency just wants someone who can execute 100% their idea how they see it and nothing else, this I try to avoid as much as possible.

Each job must be able to give some creative freedom and satisfaction to find these extra's that make the work stand out, that makes it different.

It's often in the middle of a project that you find out that certain ideas or sketches just don't work and other solutions or paths work better.

Some agencies support that and will do the effort to protect and defend this, they appreciate and love the eye for aesthetics, these are a pleasure to work with cause it motivates you to explore, to rock & roll and make something your proud of.

Do you have a signature style or trademark that you keep in each of your work?

I hope so, but I am not ambitious to become known for a certain graphic style or hype, I am more ambitious about developing an ultimate sense for composition.

Finding that subtle balance and tension, creating that atmosphere.

Since a few years I try to see each job as it would be a real life installation, not just a one perspective visual. The object and its composition need to be as good in real life.

I hope this way of approach will define my style.

Your work with 3D typography is just amazing, what fuels your passion for this kind of work?

I used to do a lot of plain simple graphic design before starting with 3d and I still have that love for typography.

It's like the first thing I often do when a visual is finished is adding plain text on it, often just some wiki text ;-)

A simple block of text can make your complete composition so much stronger.

Besides motion graphics and 3D, do you experiment on using other mediums or techniques?

Not really but I can see myself retiring being a wood craftsman and making furniture.

What keeps you busy nowadays? Any new projects that you're working on right now?

Just had a crazy busy period, finished last week a big job for Toyota commissioned by Saatchi & Saatchi La, a new neon project for EA Sports commissioned by Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam and a new editorial for Fast Company magazine.

At this moment I am working on 7 visuals for ISIS.

What advice can you give to our readers who might be aspiring to get into this line of work?

As St. Jobs says it, stay hungry, stay foolish.
